Hincapie is a well-known name in the cycling world. Ricardo Hincapie began racing bikes in his youth in Medellin, Colombia, and continued to race for 50 years after moving to Queens, New York. He instilled his passion and dedication in his two sons, Rich and George, who both began racing at the age of 8. Rich and George both worked hard and excelled in bike races across the country, but George Hincapie quickly became a familiar name across the cycling scene.
With the support of his family, George dedicated his life to training and fulfilling his dream of becoming a professional cyclist. George mirrored the hard work and dedication his father had exemplified throughout his life and quickly made that dream a reality, becoming one of the most respected and accomplished cyclists in history.
Rich took his passion for the sport of cycling into his business efforts, first promoting bicycle races across the Southeast. Then, in 2003 he launched Hincapie Sportswear in his new hometown of Greenville, S.C. As the company quickly grew, Rich reached out to his family for support—he and his uncle, Jorge Hincapie, started a factory back in Medellin to produce custom clothing for the business. Today the factory employs more than 100 people and is still run by the Hincapie family.
Since George’s retirement from the professional racing circuit, he has been directly involved in product development and testing for the company. Hincapie Sportswear has grown to become one of the top brands in the custom cycling apparel industry, backed by the passion and authenticity provided by the Hincapie family.
True to Colombian custom, Hincapie Sportswear is a full-fledged family affair. George and Rich run the Greenville-based company with the support of their parents, wives, and children — the family jumps in to assist with everything from counting socks for inventory to setting up tents for events.
In Medellin, Uncle Jorge and Aunt Mari run the factory with the help of their children as well. And although they aren’t all blood relatives, the entire Hincapie Sportswear team, in the US and in Colombia, is part of the extended Hincapie family.
Although neither of the Hincapie brothers still race, the love for cycling and thrill of racing is still very apparent. Hincapie Sportswear sponsors Holowesko|Citadel p/b Hincapie Sportswear, a cycling team racing at the pro-continental level that develops and conditions young cyclists who want to make it into the pro circuit. The Hincapie brothers mentor the cyclists to help instill in them what they were taught by their own mentor, Ricardo—hard work and dedication.
In addition to the racing team, Hincapie Sportswear also sponsors several events and races throughout the year. The Hincapie Spring Series, promoted by Rich Hincapie for more than 20 years, provides early season training for cyclists across the east coast. In October, the Gran Fondo Hincapie, hosted at the Hincapies’ Hotel Domestique, is a unique ride through the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains during the peak season of fall colors. The ride is a family-oriented event with kids’ rides, free food, and three different fully-supported route options suitable for any level of cyclist.
Domestique, a common term in cycling, is a rider who attends to every need of his team and his captain. George Hincapie is known as one of the greatest domestiques of all time, assisting in nine Tour de France wins, along with countless other victories during his career. This passion for service remains is a guiding principle for the Hincapies, as well as the Hincapie Sportswear team.
